The next event of the Cork Branch of the Irish Wildlife Trust is to visit the Gearagh. The event will be on 6th May. Meeting at 11am in the car park on the Macroom Bantry Road. For further directions please contact the cork branch on corkbranch@gmail.com. Please also bring a pack lunch if you wish. The event will take two hours.

The Gearagh is an important site  as it holds the remains of the only ancient post glacial alluvial forest in Western Europe. It was formed at the end of the last Ice Age and consists of a vast area of submerged islands that once supported a rich woodland flora. The islands, for the most part, are covered by the waters of the Lee Hydro-electrical scheme. However, during dry periods numerous rare species of plants can be encountered e.g. mud worth, which is only found in one other location outside the Gearagh. Plants species of particular interest within the woodland area are Wood Club-rush (Scirpus sylvaticus), Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) and Buckthorn (Rhanmus catharticus). These species are scarce in Ireland.
The area is also of interest to bird watchers with both summer and winter migrants. The event is highly recommended and is led by Ted Cooke. There is no charge for the event.

To: Sustainable Clonakilty <sustainableclon@gmail.com>

Places are still available on a European Sustainability Camp in West Cork.
Irish residents aged 18 to 30 years can apply to The Hollies Centre for Practical Sustainability to spend a week with young people from Spain and Portugal between 13 – 20 June 2012. They will get hands-on experience with organic gardening, building houses and baking ovens with natural materials as well as learning about conflict resolution and other life skills.
We are still looking for a number of participants for this youth exchange which is part funded by the European Commission under their Youth in Action programme. All tutors of The Hollies are involved with this camp by teaching skills that are designed to help dealing with the challenges of our times: economic downturn, climate change and the need for a more environmentally friendly and healthy way of life. The group of around 30 young people will also experience living in community and learning from each other in a multi-cultural setting.
This unique camp will take place between the 13th and the 20th June at The Hollies Centre near Enniskeane, Co.Cork and comes with an opportunity for a return visit to the Eco-Village Lakabe in the Spanish Pyrennees between 27 October – 4 November and a visit to the Portuguese Transition Town project Aldeia das Amoreiras around Easter 2013.
More information is available at http://theholliesonline.com phone: 023 8847001 or e-mail: info@theholliesonline.com
Cost: € 150.Best wishes,

Clonakilty Jungle City Summer 2012 views/ideas wanted http://www.sustainableclon.com/2012/04/clonakilty-jungle-city-summer-2012/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=clonakilty-jungle-city-summer-2012 http://www.sustainableclon.com/2012/04/clonakilty-jungle-city-summer-2012/#comments Tue, 17 Apr 2012 18:36:55 +0000 admin202 http://www.sustainableclon.com/?p=1276 A very positive meeting last night was held on the Jungle City project , where the placing of 24 life size sculptures of jungle animals around Clonakilty for a period of at least five years, was discussed.  The sculpture exhibition will be free to view and the purchase of the sculptures by Sustainable Clonakilty will result in funds going to Elephant Family to complete Asian wildlife corridors that were begun with Clonakilty’s sponsorship in 2008.   This attraction will result in bringing tourists, and families in particular, to the town to boost visitor numbers as well as helping people see the link between the loss of animal habitat, and local actions they can take themselves to protect it (no donations necessary).

Read more about the project in the link below.  Given that many people could not attend the meeting due to other commitments, Mary Powys Dillon and Derek Dillon, the project managers would like to hear as many questions, comments and ideas about the project as possible, whether favourable or not, as it is very important that everyone has a voice in this matter that affects our community. You can put your feedback or questions up on the Sustainable Clonakilty Facebook, or the I love Clonakilty Facebook  sites or send them to me at Sustainableclon@gmail.com if you wish them to be submitted anonymously along with others.  Mary and Derek will respond to all ideas and concerns and you can also email them directly at ddills@hotmail.co.uk
The deadline for this feedback is next Monday 23rd April.
Kind regards
